Moderated by Columbia Climate School’s Saul Vazquez-Pichardo, The Empowering Latinx Youth in Scholarship and Action to Combat Climate Change conversation will highlight two different but complementary perspectives that discuss the ways that place, space, and purpose can serve as the confluence for our Latine/a/o/x learners to thrive while feeling empowered to tackle one our greatest 21st Century challenges- climate change and environmental justice.
Dr. Ariam Torres Cordero will discuss his research, teaching, and community engagement which focuses on socially just disaster recovery. His efforts are also advanced through his co-founding of Urbana Planifica, a non-profit organization committed to advancing social, environmental, and climate justice goals through planning research, civic education, and community support in Puerto Rico.
Dr. Scorpio Rogers, Vice President of Mercy University’s Manhattan and Bronx campuses will discuss the ways that institutions can more intentionally foster not only inclusive but inviting spaces for learning and discovery for Latine/a/o/x students interested in STEM. Currently, Mercy University is the largest private Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in the state of New York.
