The Earth Science Colloquium Series presents:

The GeoSPACE Project and the Impact of Accessible, Inclusive Field Courses on Student Success

with Dr. Anita Marshall, Assistant Instructional Professor, Department of Geological Sciences, University of Florida.

Abstract: Field courses are a vital component of undergraduate geoscience education, yet some students, especially those with disabilities, are excluded from participation by physical and social barriers. The GeoSPACE Project aims to break down the barriers to field education with a unique hybrid planetary geology field course where students collaborate across field sites and from home through the use of communication technology. This presentation will explore the foundational principles, approach and tools of the field course, and the impact GeoSPACE has had on the retention and success of students from traditionally underserved identities in the geosciences.

Host: Jacqueline Austermann, Assistant Professor, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES).

The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students. The Colloquium Series supports the Lamont Seminar Diversity Initiative
