Background

While it is widely recognized that the impacts of climate change are felt much more severely in countries that have contributed the least to global emissions, the mechanics of how this climate justice issue is addressed by governments in global climate negotiations are much less known to the public.

The question of how to support vulnerable countries dealing with losses and damages from climate change has been at the heart of negotiations for many years, and saw a major breakthrough at COP27, with the creation of a ‘Loss and Damage Fund’. This was shortly followed by the announcement of a global finance summit in Paris called for by French President Emmanuel Macron. What are the overlapping topics of discussion across this event and the climate negotiations, and why do they matter in the fight against climate change, and for climate justice? Where should these funds come from, and what does it mean for the international community? Can the June ‘Summit for a new global finance pact’ help provide some options in preparation for COP28?

Note: This event will not be livestreamed, but it will be recorded and posted to the Columbia Global Centers | Paris YouTube channel. We invite you to subscribe, and turn on notifications to learn when the video is posted.
