The Perspectives on Peace Series Presents: Murky and Pristine Blue Pacific Waters-  Challenges of marine resource development:  Sustainable Fishing, Nuclear Waste, Plastic, Deep Sea Mining and More

President Moetai Brotherson, Head of State for French Polynesia, in conversation with Professor Jenik Radon

Introduction by Dr. Joshua D. Fisher, Director of AC4

The world's oceans are crucial systems for the survival of life on earth. They are also critical sources of livelihood, identity, cultural heritage, and sovereignty for many nations. Recent international conventions set ocean conservation as an urgent priority, while at the same time corporations, national security institutions, and national economic interests pose unprecedented threats to our oceans' ecological integrity. Pacific island states bear a disproportionate burden of those threats, and have experienced historical injustices that multiply their risk. At the same time, those states are expected to be stewards of our oceans and bear a disproportionate burden of the costs of global policies. Please join us for an intimate discussion with President Moetai Brotherson, Head of State for French Polynesia. President Brotherson will discuss these issues and share the leadership and vision that French Polynesia has for safeguarding the Pacific.

The Perspectives on Peace is an ongoing series to bring together and enhance the social sustainability community at Columbia. With film screenings or talks with authors, and notable world leaders, each session brings public conversations onto topics pertaining to social sustainability, contemporary peace, and conflict.
