THIS EVENT IS IN-PERSON ONLY

Real Solutions or Expensive Distractions? Proving or Disproving Ocean-based Carbon Dioxide Removal in the Next 5 Years.

The IPCC has made clear that carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is needed, alongside deep emissions cuts, to avoid catastrophic climate change. The world needs very large amounts of CDR, and still does not have enough options to get it. There is growing interest in ocean-based CDR techniques, but key questions remain about how effective they are in drawing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and durably storing it, as well as their environmental effects and safety. This session will provide an overview of what we know, and don't yet know, about ocean-based CDR and what we need to do to get actionable information. We will discuss the need for in-ocean research, including controlled field trials, to test different ocean CDR techniques. The social, ethical, and governance considerations associated with in-ocean research will also be explored.

Speakers:

  • Brad Ack, Ocean Visions

  • Romany Webb, Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

  • Antonius Gagern, Carbon to Sea Initiative

  • Peter De Menocal, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

  • Sara Nawaz, Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy

  • Sarah Kapnick, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration?
