Japan is a country with substantial energy demand but limited energy resources. After the March 2011 tsunami and nuclear disaster, Japan shut its nuclear power generation and leaned into imported fossil fuel energy sources, especially liquefied natural gas and coal, as well as renewables, to maintain the security of its energy supply. Now Japan’s energy mix depends more heavily on fossil fuels than in many other developed economies, but it has serious ambitions to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. How can this “hard-to-abate” country achieve its goals? What role can and should clean hydrogen and its carriers such as ammonia play in this clean transition? And what are the ramifications for Asia?
Join the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs for a roundtable discussion with Hendrik Gordenker, senior advisor and former chairman of JERA Co. Inc., Japan’s largest electricity producer. Mr. Gordenker will delve into the challenges of Japan's energy transition, and offer insights into the Japanese corporate world and recounting key aspects of his career journey in the country.
Biography
Hendrik Gordenker is senior advisor to JERA Co., Inc. He previously served as JERA’s chairman for three years and as senior corporate vice president and director. He was an external expert for JERA from the company’s founding in April 2015. JERA is Japan’s largest power generator and is involved in the energy business globally. Mr. Gordenker is also on the advisory board of a startup company, Radia, Inc., that aims to introduce radical change in onshore wind power.
Mr. Gordenker has a long involvement in Japan and in global energy. He lived in Japan in the 1980s and, after graduate studies in law and international affairs, he began practicing law in Washington, D.C. He was a partner of White & Case LLP based in Tokyo from 2000 to 2014, in the firm’s global energy practice, focusing on LNG and power.
Mr. Gordenker holds AB and MPA degrees from Princeton University, a JD degree from Columbia Law School, and an International Directors Programme Certificate from INSEAD.
