America's tornado death counts have dropped dramatically from a peak in the early 20th century but far too often - particularly in an active year like 2023 so far - people are dying or being badly injured in their homes despite ever-improving forecasts, warnings and construction codes and methods. Manufactured homes, which are often referred to as mobile homes, are particularly vulnerable. The booming industry making them swears they are as safe as stick-built homes.
