Fall 2020 Pre-College Program Info Session - Let the Youth Lead

Description: Through this course, students will understand their positionality in the world and the ways they are able to influence change. Students will explore the relationship between themselves and the context of climate challenges. Students will become familiar with systemic approaches to addressing social problems, particularly by learning Design and Systems Thinking (DST) mapping protocols and the Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM) theory. This course uses case studies to explore best practices of sustainability, social innovation, and thinking for the future. Students will become familiar with cutting-edge literature on youth leadership and intersectionality as an approach to social transformation, as well as with emerging theories and methods for negotiation and conflict transformation. 

Learning Objectives/Themes:

  • Explore tools to connect with storytelling and communication
  • Acquire knowledge of the central tenors of Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM) (Mystery, Coherence, and Coordination)
  • Analyze cutting edge literature on youth leadership and intersectionality
  • Study theories and methods for negotiation and conflict transformation
  • Understand systemic approaches to addressing social problems, particularly by learning Design and Systems Thinking (DST) mapping protocols
  • Draw from systems thinking approaches

Who is the workshop for: The workshop is intended for high school learners interested in leadership and climate activism. The workshop provides the knowledge, skills, and tools for young leaders to deep dive into themes of climate communication, climate leadership, conflict resolution, and project design. To achieve the workshop learning objectives, students will synthesize scientific research, policy, and case studies. The workshop is designed for learners from all different academic backgrounds and interests as we will take an interdisciplinary approach to develop solutions.

Learning Modalities: This workshop will be offered in a virtual format via Zoom. It will feature a mixture of lecture, discussion, and audio/visual materials. 

Please note that all workshops are taught in English. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
