Teaching with Maps

In collaborations with in-service teachers, the National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP) has developed a set of classroom-ready curriculum resources that integrate GIS mapping technology to explore climate change, equity, and disaster risk reduction. These instructional materials help students engage with real-world data through interactive lessons using mapping tools such as the Resilience Analysis and Planning Tool (RAPT) and the National Risk Index (NRI). Designed to enhance climate literacy and disaster preparedness education, these resources provide educators with innovative strategies to connect complex geospatial data to community resilience and social vulnerability in meaningful ways.

This project was part of the National Science Foundation funded Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program, a six-week initiative that immerses K12 teachers in research projects to help them translate multifaceted climate research into classroom ready lessons.
