Nearly a decade after countries adopted the Paris Agreement and endorsed its goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, the average global temperature surpassed this benchmark for the first time in 2024. While some Asian countries have set ambitious targets, or “Nationally Determined Contributions” (NDCs), most have been unable to achieve them. Meanwhile, as the world grapples with multiple pressing crises, climate has been sidelined as a political cause, further exacerbating a negative feedback loop.
Asia will play a central role in shaping global emissions trajectories in the decades ahead, as the region continues to drive a large share of economic growth, energy demand, and infrastructure investment. This makes the design and deployment of effective, scalable climate policies in Asian economies particularly consequential. Market-based mechanisms—such as carbon pricing, subsidies, and emissions trading systems—offer promising tools to reduce emissions while supporting competitiveness and growth, but their success depends on careful policy design, political feasibility, and regional context.
Join the Asia Society Policy Institute and the Columbia University Climate School for an expert panel discussion on the path to advancing market-based solutions for mitigating climate change. Adam Tooze, Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of History at Columbia University, and Akshat Rathi, Senior Reporter at Bloomberg, will join Alexis Abramson, Dean and Professor of Climate at the Columbia Climate School, for this conversation.
