Water tables and the Earth system in the past, present, and future
with Dr. Kerry Lee Callaghan, Assistant Professor Palaeohydrology, Regional and Global Hydrology, Landscape Analysis, University of Illinois Chicago.
Lakes and groundwater are integral parts not only of the global water cycle, but of the whole Earth system. Long-term changes in lake and groundwater storage impact ecosystems and human communities, control carbon cycling, and contribute to both local and global sea-level change. Despite widespread evidence for dramatic past changes to lakes and wetlands, global-scale changes in water tables have remained unknown until recently. I will share results from a 21,000-year global simulation of transient water-table change, starting from the Last Glacial Maximum and ending in the present day. I will discuss how these results impact the Earth system, including both global and local sea levels through changing storage and glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). Finally, I will share ongoing work that investigates how water tables will continue to change through the end of the century.
