El Niño’s effects are already being felt across countries and sectors, with implications that extend well beyond the regions experiencing the most direct impacts. Changes in temperature and rainfall can affect fisheries, agriculture, energy, and infrastructure, creating challenges for food security, global supply chains, economies, and financial markets.
Moderated by Professor Caroline Flammer, Founding Director of Columbia’s Sustainable Investing Research Initiative (SIRI), this conversation will bring together perspectives from climate science, industry, and investment to explore the connections between physical climate risk, economic activity, markets, and capital. Beyond El Niño’s physical impacts, the panel will also explore what kinds of investment and financing are needed—especially in emerging and developing economies—to foster more sustainable food systems and long-term economic resilience.
