Radiogenic Isotopes in Ocean Sediments South of Africa: What do they tell us?

The Cape Basin south of Africa is of paleoceanographic importance as it sits in the direct path of Agulhas Leakage and also at the confluence of NADW and southern source waters (AABW, AAIW, CDW). As such, the region provides the opportunity to study both the upper and lower limbs of the global overturning circulation. Radiogenic isotopes measured in authigenic or biogenic phases can tell us about deep water flow and that has been discussed widely in the scientific literature. In this talk, I will discuss radiogenic isotopes measured in the terrigenous sediments found in the Cape Basin and what they can tell us about the Agulhas Leakage and the climate of South Africa.
