Six ways of looking at Large Igneous Province CO2

Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) rank as some of Earth’s most voluminous magmatic events, and in multiple cases coincide with profound disruptions of the carbon cycle, climate, and life. Paleoclimate records suggest massive CO2 release is central to such disruption, but determining how, when, and why LIPs release CO2 is challenging. In this talk I consider multiple perspectives on LIP CO2, including datasets from paleoclimatology, petrology, and geodynamics, with the goal of building a more comprehensive portrait of the temporal evolution of LIP carbon emissions and environmental consequences.
