The Earth Science Colloquium Series presents:
Know Thy Neighbor As Thyself: CIESIN Research and Data of Interest to Earth Scientists
with Dr. Alexander de Sherbinin, Director, CIESIN
Abstract: The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) moved onto the Lamont Campus just over 25 years ago as part of the nascent Earth Institute, and its research staff, GIS/IT professionals, and data management experts have been frequent collaborators with many LDEO and IRI scientists over the years. Yet, there are aspects of CIESIN's work that are still little known to the wider Lamont community. This presentation seeks to fill those knowledge gaps by describing a range of CIESIN projects, data development efforts, and research and data outputs, from CIESIN's bread-and-butter of population and infrastructure mapping to more recent efforts to better understand spatial patterns of climate vulnerability, migration, and mitigation potential.
The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students. The Colloquium Series supports the Lamont Seminar Diversity Initiative.
