The Lamont Earth Science Colloquium presents:

Changing Polar Oceans – What happens in and under the ice

with Dr. Antje Boetius, President and Chief Executive Officer, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute

The ice-covered Arctic and Southern Ocean are among the least explored ecosystems on Earth in terms of ice and ocean processes, and feedback from polar life. Together, ice-covered seas make up ~15% of the global ocean, contributing to the large cold-water biome on Earth, with temperatures near or below the freezing point. In recent decades, polar seas have lost sea ice more rapidly than before in human history. This rapid transformation challenges our understanding of sea ice behavior and links to ocean and atmosphere processes. This presentation takes you on a dive beneath the sea ice, and highlights recent scientific findings from the Central Arctic Ocean and the immense polar change which is ongoing from the surface to the deep sea. It underscores the importance of international research initiatives and discusses how they can help inform about the future of polar seas.

Host: Dr. Ajit Subramaniam, Lamont Research Professor, LDEO.

The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students.
