The Lamont Earth Science Colloquium presents:

Regional climate change: consensus, discrepancies, and ways forward

with Dr. Tiffany Shaw, Professor, Department of Geophysical Sciences, University of Chicago.

Climate change has emerged across many regions. Some observed regional climate changes, such as amplified Arctic warming and land-sea warming contrasts have been successfully predicted by climate models. However, regional discrepancies between observations and model predictions have also emerged. Addressing these discrepancies, puzzles and limitations is essential, because understanding and reliably predicting regional climate change is necessary in order to communicate effectively about the underlying drivers of change, provide reliable information to stakeholders, enable societies to adapt, and increase resilience and reduce vulnerability. In this talk I will highlight successes and discrepancies in climate model predictions of historical changes. I will discuss ongoing work that is using the climate model hierarchy to move beyond quantification into understanding the sources of discrepancies. I will also highlight emerging new tools such as kilometer scale climate models and Artificial Intelligence models that when brought into the hierarchy hold great promise for pushing our understanding forward.

Host: Dr. Lorenzo Polvani, Maurice Ewing and J. Lamar Worzel Professor of Geophysics, LDEO

The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students. The Colloquium Series supports the Lamont Seminar Diversity Initiative
