The Lamont Earth Science Colloquium presents:

Birth, Life, and Death of Icebergs

Dr. Till Wagner, Assistant Professor, Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Icebergs make up roughly half of the mass that is shed from the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets. Their trajectories and decay not only play a critical operational role in high latitude ocean activities, but they also have far-reaching impacts on the climate. In this talk, I will look at how icebergs calve off glaciers and ice shelves, how they drift through the oceans, and how they decay, break up, and melt — altering oceanic conditions in their wake. I will discuss recent advances and challenges in observing and modeling the birth, life, and death of icebergs through the biased lens of my own research.

Host: Dr. Roger Buck, Lamont Research Professor, Marine and Polar Geophysics, LDEO.

The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students.
