The Lamont Earth Science Colloquium presents:
Songs of Ice and Fire: Fiber Seismic Sensing over Antarctica and Iceland
with Dr. Zhongwen Zhan, Professor of Geophysics; Clarence R. Allen Leadership Chair, Seismological Laboratory; Director, Seismological Laboratory, Caltech.
Glaciers and volcanoes are critical to our global environment, yet their internal "plumbing" remains one of the most difficult systems to measure in situ. This colloquium explores a paradigm shift in geophysical monitoring to fill this gap: the use of fiber-optic cables as continuous seismic sensors. I will share results from Antarctica and Iceland that reveal previously invisible subglacial processes and volcanic activities and discuss how this shift from sparse to dense sensing is providing a new, high-definition lens on Earth's most extreme environments.
Host: Dr. Andrew Lloyd, Lamont Assistant Research Professor, Seismology, Geology and Tectonophysics, LDEO
The Earth Science Colloquium Series, sponsored by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia University Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES), provides a lively forum for discussing a wide variety of topics within the Earth sciences and related fields. Colloquia are attended by the full range of scientific and technical staff at LDEO. Colloquium attendance is required of all pre-orals DEES graduate students.
