Orion Magazine at 40 – Writers on Environments, Past and Ahead

Join this special Sustain What conversation exploring the 40th-anniversary issue of Orion Magazine, for which 40 writers were asked to convey in prose, poetry and other forms what it means to have our species usher in a new geological epoch – by one name the Anthropocene.

The summer of 2022 will see the first public data from the Anthropocene Working Group - the team of geologists searching for the location on Earth that demonstrates the irreversible impact of modern humanity. After two decades of research, that location, and the story told by its sediment core, will be cited as the origin of the Anthropocene, the epoch that severs our connection to our ancestors.

The issue features work by Maira Kalman, Barbara Kingsolver, Elizabeth Kolbert, Ken Liu, Barry Lopez, Meehan Crist, NRDC president Manish Bapna and Maria Popova. It is a chorus of origin stories and a compass that may help all of us navigate the next 40 years and beyond.

Your host is Andy Revkin of the Columbia Climate School (also an essay contributor). He will be joined by Manish Bapna of NRDC, Meehan Crist, who is writer-in-residence in biology at Columbia, and Orion’s editor-in-chief, Sumanth Prabhaker.
