Teaching is too often something we do in silos, but we believe it is a practice that is enriched when we share, experience, and reflect together. Jointly sponsored by Columbia's Center for Teaching and Learning and Barnard's Center for Engaged Pedagogy, the Pedagogy in Practice series is an invitation to do just that. We invite you to join colleagues across disciplines to see a masterful practitioner in action.
For this session, we are honored to feature Sheila Foster (Professor of Climate, Columbia Climate School; affiliated faculty, Law School), who will tackle one of the most pressing challenges in the classroom today: how do we teach students to think critically?
In this session, Sheila will share her approach to teaching with us and demonstrate a lesson firsthand. In her seminar “Environmental Justice Law and Policy” Sheila pushes students to think critically about justice concepts that seem simple at first glance, toward a deeper, messier engagement with these concepts using simulations that students co-produce and direct in class. These simulations force students into different roles and to grapple with and then reflect critically on what emerged from the simulation. Sheila will walk us through a simulation, one that starts from a seemingly straightforward scenario and grows more complicated as students role-play their positions. Following her demo, we will move into an open, stimulating discussion about how these creative methods might resonate in your own teaching context.
