Student Roundtable with Paul Dabbar: Trends in Energy Technology and R&D
Please join the Center on Global Energy Policy for a virtual roundtable discussion with Paul Dabbar, CGEP Distinguished Visiting Fellow and former U.S. Department of Energy Under Secretary for Science, focusing on current energy topics from a technology and R&D policy perspective.
There have been large jumps in energy technologies over the past twenty years, including in solar, wind, batteries, and drilling technologies. And United States federal investment in future development in energy technologies has increased significantly over the last five years. Finally, there is significant interest in accelerating energy infrastructure spending from the government and private sectors. In this session, Paul Dabbar will discuss his unique perspectives on the following issues:
- Energy technology expectations twenty years ago vs what transpired over that generation, and what caused those differences in technology outcomes
- What public and private energy technology R&D had the most impact, and what to take away from those experiences for future R&D policy
- Which new technologies in the R&D stage are the most interesting
This session will be highly interactive, with a majority of the time devoted to discussion among the participants.
The Honorable Paul M. Dabbar is a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Center on Global Energy Policy. He was Under Secretary for Science at the U.S. Department of Energy, in charge of fundamental energy research, energy technologies, science, and commercialization of technologies. He managed over 60,000 people with a budget of $15 billion p.a. at over 100 sites, including managing the majority of the U.S. National Laboratories. Before that he led over $400BN in energy sector investments across all technologies, was a nuclear submarine officer and lab researcher. He has degrees from the U.S. Naval Academy and Columbia University.
