Natural Resources, Development, and Brazil's Place in the Global Economy

Event Description: Taking a Global South perspective, this session uses Brazil as a case study to examine the political and economic consequences of globalization for a commodity-exporting country subordinately integrated into the international financial system. We will trace Brazil's successive development models and consider how they have shaped its current position in a global economy increasingly marked by rivalry between China and the United States. Finally, we will examine how Brazil can move up global value chains and respond to the growing demand for resources needed for the green transition while protecting the environment and advancing national development priorities—and how such a transformation can be made democratically viable: who participates in defining it, who benefits, who bears its costs, and what political coalitions can sustain it.
Speaker bio: Daniela Campello is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Affairs at Columbia University. A political economist specializing in emerging democracies, she studies how global economic integration shapes domestic politics, development, and democracy. She is the author of The Politics of Market Discipline in Latin America and co-author of The Volatility Curse, both published by Cambridge University Press. Her current book project examines the politics of climate policy in Brazil. Campello previously taught at Princeton University and Fundação Getulio Vargas and held research fellowships at Oxford University and the Wilson Center.
This talk is part of the Political, Social, and Economic Development of Brazil Seminar Series, an interdisciplinary series that brings together speakers with diverse expertise on Brazil. This fall, sessions will address topics including land conflict, Brazil’s relations with China and the United States, race, gender, and the criminal justice system, as well as how international investors assess Brazil’s opportunities and constraints.
